Chatteris is a small Fen market town sitting between March and Huntingdon, with open farmland running away from it in every direction. It is the flatness that defines a roof here. There is no hill, no belt of trees, nothing between the town and the horizon to slow the wind down, so rain arrives sideways and lifted tiles are a routine event rather than a once-in-a-decade drama. We are based in Wisbech, out in the same Fen country, so these are the roofs we know best.

The town centre and the newer edges

Chatteris splits neatly into two kinds of roof. Around the centre the properties are older brick, with the pointing, leadwork and chimney stacks you would expect on a house of that age, and repairs there are about matching materials and getting the detail right. Out on the edges of the town, newer estate development brings modern tile with dry verge and dry ridge, plastic guttering, and flat-roofed extensions and garages. Different houses, different faults, the same wind hitting both.

Catch wind damage early

Wind damage almost always starts small. One tile out of course, a lifted corner of flashing, a ridge that has begun to rock. Left through a Fen winter, that small opening lets driving rain into the felt and then into the timbers, and a job that would have taken an hour turns into a re-roof and a plasterer. Our roof repairs cover slipped and missing tiles, storm damage, worn flashing and the leaks that follow, and we refix the surrounding area rather than just dropping a tile back into the gap.

When an older Chatteris roof has genuinely finished, our new roofs and re-roofs go on with a breathable membrane and mechanically fixed ridges and verges, which is what an exposed Fen roof needs. Blocked and sagging fascias, soffits and guttering are a steady job on the old streets and the new estates alike, the extensions and garages on the edge of town are covered by our flat roofing in fibreglass and EPDM rubber, and we handle chimney repairs, repointing and leadwork on the older stacks. Damp Fen air grows moss quickly, so roof cleaning is a regular booking here too.
